Preliminary Memorial Ceremony for the 650th Anniversary of Daihonzan Sojiji's second abbot, Gasan Joseki Zenji (Anglais)

SOJO: Can you hear the great sound of the holy footsteps?

What is Onki?

Onki is a Ceremony that is held long after ancestral teachers and others have passed away, in memory of their merits. Usually it is held every fifty years following the fiftieth anniversary of the person's death. In the Sotoshu, the memorial Ceremony for the founders and the second abbots of both Eiheiji and Sojiji are called Daionki, Great Memorial Ceremonies.

At Daihonzan Sojiji, we respectfully call Taiso Keizan Zenji, the founder of Sojiji, and Gasan Joseki Zenji, the second abbot of Sojiji, "Goryoson, "the Two Venerable Ones. This coming 2015, we will observe the 650th Memorial Ceremony for Gasan Zenji and in 2024, the 700th Memorial Ceremony for Taiso Keizan Zenji. We conduct these two Memorial Ceremonies not as two separate projects but as a single long term Ceremony spanning about ten years: "Goryoson Daionki Houe," the Great Ceremony for Commemorating the Two Venerable Ones. This includes various ceremonies and events centering on the teaching of transmission, "Sojo." From the time of the founding of Sojiji, Keizan Zenji and Gasan Zenji always met people and society sincerely. They laid the foundation of Sojiji and dedicated their efforts to the expansion of Soto Zen Buddhism. We wholeheartedly give our attention to the sounds of their holy footsteps and the sound of our sangha's footsteps at the present moment and in the future.

*Sangha (僧伽, abridged as 僧) is the assembly of those learning and practicing the Buddha Dharma. Sometimes lay people are also included in sangha.
