What is SDGs?

“SDGs” stands for “Sustainable Development Goals,” a set of international guidelines for connecting the earth and our lives to the future. It was adopted unanimously by all 193 countries at a United Nations summit in 2015. Based on the principle “Leave No One Behind,” and prioritizing especially those currently left furthest behind, SDGs aims to address the world’s poverty, hunger, social inequalities, environmental degradation, and the like. A set of 17 goals has been established, with an achievement target date of 2030.

The connection to the Sotoshu

Since 1991, the Sotoshu has been engaged in a variety of activities under the slogan “human rights, peace, environment.” Its path leads toward the realization of the world in which no one is left behind that is aimed at by SDGs. The dedication of each individual to the teachings of the Sotoshu comes to fruition as the practice of SDGs. It is the daily work of Soto Zen, nothing extraordinary, that has the power to open up the future.
