The Shōbōgenzō (Treasury of the True Dharma Eye) was composed by Dogen-zenji and, alongside Keizan-zenji's Denkoroku (Transmission of Illumination), stands as one of the most profound ancestral records of our sect.
The first fascicle, Bendowa (Talk on Pursuing the Way), was presented in 1231 (Kangen 3), and the work culminates in the ninety-fifth fascicle, Hachidainingaku (The Eight Understandings of a Great Person), which was Dogen-zenji’s final teaching given in 1253 (Kencho 5). Compiled as a ninety-five fascicle edition in 1690 (Genroku 3), the Shobogenzo transmits the "correctly transmitted Buddhadharma" to the present day through the teachings set forth in each fascicle. The titles of the individual fascicles are said to have been given by Dogen-zenji himself.
